SACNAS Genome Scholars Fellow, with $25,000 funding for graduate research
The program is intended for students currently pursuing graduate education in Genomics (In genomics we include: ethical, legal, and/or social implications of genomic research; computational biology as it relates to genomics, bioengineering as it relates to genomics)
Cecilia was born in El Salvador and came to the United States at the age of 11. After graduating from high school, Cecilia pursued a degree in fashion design from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, but she was determined to do something more challenging. She went back to school to become a high school biology teacher. While in community college she met a professor who encouraged her to pursue a graduate degree in addition to the bachelor’s. She attended the University of California, Riverside and completed a B.S. degree in Biology in 2006. Cecilia is currently a graduate student in Plant Biology and is a Bridge to the Doctorate Fellow. |

HENAAC/ Duke Energy Foundation Scholarship & Top Graduate Recipient
Raquel was born in Mexico, came to the United States as a teenager, and participated in the UC Berkeley Upward Bound Program. She was admitted to UC Berkeley and received a degree in Chemical Engineering in 2006. While at Berkeley, Raquel was a member of the UC LEADS program and she participated in a summer internship at the Berkeley Lawrence National Lab where she worked for 2006 Nobel Laureate George Smoot. She also became active in several outreach projects and became a volunteer for the "Communities, Water, and Wildlife Project" in Kenya, Africa. Raquel is currently a graduate student in Chemical Engineering, a member of the Designated Emphasis in Biotechnology (DEB) Program and a Bridge to the Doctorate Fellow.
