The California LSAMP Representation
at SACNAS 2007 Was Substantial!
Following are the student groups by campus that attended and presented at SACNAS 2007. All contributed to CAMP success at a major national conference.

UC BERKELEY:  Diana Lizarraga sent a group of 14 students who especially  enjoyed the networking experience. Jesús A. Rondón, molecular and cell biology, earned a poster award (and $250). Ana Luz Acevedo-Cabrera, Geophysics, also presented a poster. Attendees: Geovani Mejia-Salazar, Andrew Bozant, Abel Gonzalez, Luis Martinez (2007 CAMP Statewide Special Merit in Research Awardee), Gabriel Hernandez Chang, Blanca Mendoza, Amelia Ramirez-Correa, and Alma Luna. CAMP-Berkeley also brought three from UC Merced: Esmeraldo Aguayo, Fatima Barragan and Yimdriuska Magan (all are human biology majors who attended the 2007 CAMP Statewide Symposium).

UC DAVIS:
Renee Maldonado accompanied Jose Zavala and Mary Molina, both Mechanical Engineering majors, who presented posters.  A SACNAS student chapter is being planned at Davis for next academic year, and Renee says that a large group of presenters is anticipated for the 2008 conference in Salt Lake City.

UC SAN DIEGO:
Dr. Jacqueline Azize-Brewer accompanied six CAMP students, three of whom won awards. Jacquie reports that "the students had a great learning and networking experience and truly enjoyed the conference. All presented their research in poster format and were all awarded the SACNAS Travel Scholarship which covered the hotel and airfare." The students were: Antoinette CorbinJorge Ortiz, Award in Engineering; Robert Valtierra, Award in Engineering; Breena Fraga, Award in Chemistry; Marcus Rosario, and Lisandro Maya-Ramos. Additionally, two SD graduate students presented: Serena Moseman (CAMP 2001-02) and Elisa Maldonado.

UC SANTA BARBARA:
Dr. Dotti Pak sent five students with four presenting. They were Sandra Bravo, Chemistry; Natalie Wilson, Biology; Jose Muro and Jesse Torres, Mechanical Engineering; and Manuel Olmedo, Physics. Dotti reports that the students thought it was a great experience, especially those for whom it was a second trip--they felt that they were better prepared to take advantage of the information available, and not just completely overwhelmed.

UC SANTA CRUZ:
Malika Bell took seven students, with nearly all receiving SACNAS travel awards.  Yonathan Essaw presented Wolbachia Transmission in Wild Drosophila (research with Bill Sullivan).  Ashley Sanders presented "Creating Co-Expression Vectors for Structural Studies of Spliceosome Proteins" (research with John Little, Melissa Jurica). Attendees: Michael Sebastian, Marisella Marinez, Ken Dixon, Laura Jimenez and Shewit Tekesete.

UC IRVINE:
Kika Friend, led a group of 20! Elizabeth Partida (Biological Sciences) brought home the gold for  her research, "The Effect of Age Following a Moderate Contusion Spinal Cord Injury."  Elizabeth's mentor is Ph.D. Candidate Manuel Galvan, in the lab of Dr. Aileen J. Anderson. The Irvine contingency included CAMP-ers: John Aguilar, Frank Avedo, Aaron Botello, Monica Castaneda, Nery Chapeton,  Vidal Cortes, Jorge De Paz, Ricardo Komai, Andre Paredes, Teffany Rivas, Joel Rivera, Refugio Roman, Helen Sanchez, Edna Santillan, Angelina Sylvain, Timothy Thatcher, Sandra Tran, Belen Vasquez and Jennie Vergara. Seventeen students presented. (Remember when? In 2005 Kika won the SACNAS Professional Mentor Award.)

UCLA:
Laina Long led a huge group!  UCLA Awardees were: Carolina Mendez, CAMP/MARC senior, for "Chemical Precipitation Techniques to Remove Viruses out of Seawater"; and Maria Meza Lopez, CAMP/UC LEADS, and Bridge transfer student, for "Revealing Gene Function Using Phenotypic Analysis of Neurospora Crassa Knockout Mutants" (Dr. Richard Weiss lab). The group photo shows the full complement of UCLA attendees, including CAMP-ers from two previous CAMP Statewide Symposia:  Alberto Ponce, Sergio Pacheco, Rodrigo Gonzalez, Mika Guzman, Isabel Neacato and Velveth Klee.  (Miss Klee shared her international research experience in Thailand in the CAMP 2007 Proceedings & Profiles.).
